Welcome, cannabis connoisseurs and enthusiasts! Today, we’re going on a journey to uncover the origins and evolution of the iconic cannabis holiday: 4-20. Let’s grab your favorite strain, roll one up, get comfy, and let’s delve into the fascinating history behind this beloved celebration.
The Birth of 4-20: A Stoner’s Tale
Legend has it that the term “4/20” originated in the early 1970s in the United States. A group of high school students known as the “Waldos,” hailing from San Rafael, California, used to meet at 4:20 p.m. after school by their campus’ statue of Louis Pasteur to partake. They chose that time as most extracurricular activities had ended. Since they met at a wall, “Waldos” became the name the group was known by.
Some also say the term 420 comes from a group of Deadheads in Oakland passing out fliers inviting people to smoke with them on April 20 (4/20) at 4:20pm. The tale says that one of those fliers found it’s way to High Times Magazine.
From Subculture to Mainstream Movement
What started as a code among a small group of friends soon gained traction and spread like wildfire, thanks to the power of word-of-mouth and the burgeoning cannabis community. As the years passed, the holiday evolved from a local secret to a global phenomenon celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts worldwide.
